Recycling Efforts Increase

The eighth annual RecycleMania competition has begun and has attracted over 400 colleges and universities from 46 different states. RecyleMania, which was started by University of Ohio’s Ed Newman and Miami University’s Stacy Edmonds, claims that their goal is to “get more recycling [done] on campus.”

Students compete to see which school can collect the largest amount of recyclables, or see who has the highest recycling rate.

Business Fest Brings Companies to Campus

Business Fest 2008, a George Mason University School of Management event, was held in Dewberry Hall on Thursday, Jan. 31, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

The function’s stated goal was to bring local companies to campus and help act as “a liaison for students to the business world,” was hailed as a success by the organizers, who reported a turnout of 200 to 300 attendees, approximately 100 more than had been expected.

One Stop Shop Offers More for Students

A new convenience store opened in Blueridge Hall last Wednesday, providing new food options for Mason students and giving Chesapeake and DUCC residents a place to get a quick snack close to home.

The One Stop Patriot Shop, open from 7 a.m. to 2 a.m. seven days a week, offers some choices not found in the Johnson Center’s Express, including soymilk, cereal, 12-packs of soda and a selection of frozen drinks.

Romney Drops Out of Presidential Race

This afternoon, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney announced that he was dropping out of the presidential race during his speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.

Romney, who did not fare as well as competitor John McCain on Super Tuesday, claimed that he hoped this decision would strengthen the likelihood of a Republican president taking office.

Bill Would Ban Text Messaging While Driving

Virginia’s General Assembly is taking into account a set of bills that would ban text messaging on cell phones while operating a vehicle. Under this new proposal, text messaging, also referred to as “texting,” while driving a car, motorcycle, moped, bicycle and electric wheelchair would be considered a misdemeanor. The punishment would be a fine of $250.00 plus court fees.

Mason Math Student Wins First Prize in Poster Session

Steve Hendrickson, an undergraduate mathematics major at Mason, was a first-prize award winner at the 2008 Joint Mathematics Meeting of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America, held in San Diego, Ca., Jan. 5-9, 2008. Hendrickson won the $100 cash award in the MAA Undergraduate Research Poster Competition, sponsored by all of the major mathematical organizations in the country.
