Rappahannock River Lane Closing Indefinitely

Beginning this Friday, Feb. 22, Rappahannock River Lane, which runs between Lots F and G, will be closed until further notice.

The road will be closed to both through traffic from Patriot Circle to University Drive, and to parallel parking on the sides. Any cars still parked there as of Friday will either be ticketed or towed.

Seniors Give Back to Help Future

A recent campaign from the Office of Annual Giving is encouraging this year’s graduates to give a small donation back to the university. With a slogan geared towards all students, the organization is known for “making a difference, one student at a time.”

The initiative, which will request seniors to donate $20.08 in order to fund scholarships for future Mason students, will allow the recent graduates to leave a lasting mark at the university.

George Mason University is no stranger to the color green. Anyone looking at the university colors, which happen to be green and gold – or the lush forestry surrounding our campuses – can see the evidence. So it is no surprise that one of Mason’s recent policy events, presented by the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution, addressed one of the many issues related to the world-wide effort to “go green” on sustainability.

Last Full Lunar Eclipse Until 2010 Is Tonight

The last full lunar eclipse until Dec. 20, 2010 will occur tonight, Feb. 20.

Beginning at 8:43 p.m. EST, a partial eclipse will take place. Shortly after 10 p.m., the moon will be completely in Earth’s shadow until 10:51 p.m. The eclipse will end at approximately midnight.

Mason Basketball Games at the Patriot Center
February 20 and February 27

Expect heavy traffic the evenings of Wednesday February 20 and Wednesday February 27 for the last two Mason men's basketball games at the Patriot Center. Tip-off for both games is 9 p.m., so expect the heaviest traffic before the games from 7:30 to 9 p.m. and after the games from 11 to 11:30 p.m.

Wildfires Occur in Virginia

Fires swept across the southern and central regions of Virginia the weekend of the ninth. Due to the conditions, on Sunday, Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine declared a state of emergency. According to CNN.com, fires in some areas caused road closings and home evacuations Sunday, and winds only worsened conditions across the state, propelling the fires even further.

A Fight for Rights in Uganda

On Wednesday, Feb. 13, Uganda Help, a club formerly known as Invisible Children, held their first official meeting in the Women’s Center. The meeting was relocated to Johnson Center Room 240K, instead of the JC Meeting Room C on the third floor. More than a dozen students were in attendance to discuss the current situation in northern Uganda.

The meeting began with a brief quiz about an African region, which demonstrated the knowledge that students had about the situation.

Security on Short Notice

When Bill Clinton spoke to a packed Johnson Center audience on Monday, Feb. 11, a security guard paced the building, telling people that were trying to catch a glimpse of the former president to get off the chairs they were standing on.

The security guard’s orders went mostly unnoticed as crowds of students, supporters and onlookers pressed toward the railings and walls to witness an event that was planned just one day in advance.

The College of William & Mary recently encountered a crossroads between state and education, as House delegates have pushed for the review and removal of the college's president, while students and faculty claim it was the state and the state-appointed Board of Visitors who lacked transparency.
