The Last Monarchs to perform in Student Media office

The Last Monarchs will perform this Friday in the new Student Media office in Student Union Building II, now called “the Hub.”
The Last Monarchs who describe themselves as a four piece acoustic indie folk band will be the first in the concert series “Sessions.” The series is sponsored by WGMU and Mason Cable Network and each concert will be filmed by MCN. MCN will then make a music video of each concert.
Retired coast guard admiral will deliver 2011 commencement address
|Retired U.S. Coast Guard admiral Thad Allen has worked on the scenes of hurricanes, helped lead security responses on September 11, and was the national incident commander of the recent BP oil spill. In May, Allen will set his sights to George Mason University as he is scheduled to give the commencement speech at graduation, according to the Mason Gazette.
Allen will be the keynote speaker for Mason’s 2011 Commencement, which is to be held Sat. May 21 at 10 a.m. This will be Mason 44th commencement and it will be located in the Patriot Center.

Online registration for housing slowed, but working
|Pack your patience if you’re planning to register for a housing assignment today or tomorrow. According to a representative from Housing, the website to register is moving "slow."
Students not retaining a room and using general selection were given set times by the housing office to sign up today and tomorrow to pick their housing assignment for the fall semester. According to a representative from Housing, with the influx of students trying to register, the website has been crashing.
Selective withdrawal deadline this Friday
|This Friday is the deadline to register for selective withdrawal from a spring semester course.
Students are given a maximum of three selective withdrawals in their time at Mason. A withdrawal allows a student to drop a class with no consequences; and the class will be counted as attempted hours.
The class comes up as a “W” for withdrawal on a student’s transcript. Attempted hours are used to determine a student’s credit level and GPA standards for figuring academic standing.

Panel to discuss impact of social media on the Middle East
|During Egypt’s recent political uprising, social media played a major role in rallying Egyptians around their cause of pushing former President Hosni Mubarak out of office.
On Saturday, Oneblue.tv will be filming the pilot episode of their new internet broadcast, with the first topic being “Can Social Media Bring Democratic Reform to the Middle East?”
