All I Want For Christmas Is….

It is that time of year again, folks! There is a month left before the big sha-bang [also known as Christmas] and many have already begun their preparations. Christmas lights are being set up, tickets are being bought for those going out of town, and mall Santas [along with parents] are now being accosted by thousands of children presenting their Christmas lists hoping to get what they have asked for. Unknown to them, it is rare to get everything you ask for; a lesson us older kids had to learn. Thinking back on this time when I was a kid, I remember that there was some stuff that I had asked for but never got.
Thanks a lot, Santa!
So, I went on a search to find other students who shared this grief with me. I asked a few students here at Mason what Christmas gift did they always want but unfortunately never received.
Katrina Petz, Sophomore -
She thought quietly to herself before answering: “I wanted one of those Barbie car things.”
How come she never got it?
“I’m not sure. My parents probably thought it was too expensive or that I would cause trouble with it. Maybe I did not ask for it enough…”
Kelly James, Junior -
“I wanted a cat but my mom and I are both allergic. I got a snake instead.”
I suppose that is a fair trade.
When asked what kind of snake she received, she replied: “It was a green garter snake.”
Marshai McIntyre, Sophomore -
Marshai grinned brightly: “I wanted a purse with ‘Marshai’ all over it. You know how you can find stuff with people’s names on it? I could never find my name, only “Marsha” and I had to add an ‘i’ at the end.”
Jamel Lavine, Sophomore -
Jamel brought up a Christmas gift he wanted when he used to live in Japan: “I wanted a type of train-transformers toy. It was red, green, and blue. I did not get it because it was too childish and I was too grown for it.”
Bummer.
Kelly Michals, Sophomore –
Kelly thought back to her musical days: “I wanted a keyboard and eventually I got it.”
But if you got what you wanted what is there to complain about?
“I got a keyboard but it was not the one I wanted. The one I wanted was too expensive.”
Vanmany Sananikone, Sophomore –
Vanmany brought up the Christmas gift that I too always wanted when I was younger: an Easy-Bake set.
“Everyone had one and I wanted one too. I also wanted one of those real-life baby dolls that cried and pooped.”
I could have done without the popping baby but who does not want an Easy-Bake?
