The George Mason Women’s Basketball team defeated the Davis and Elkins Senators, 85-36, in an exhibition match at the Patriot Center Monday night. The Patriots showcased several rotations of players in the process, alternating three main lineups over the course of the game.
“We played a complete game by getting it done on the boards, limiting turnovers, and scoring the basketball, and also playing assertive and efficient defense,” senior forward Angelee LaTouche said.
Mason showed depth as each squad contributed points and assists on the board, including freshmen guards Christine Weithman and Cierra Strickland.
Freshmen were not the only new faces, however. New additions to the roster were juniors Evelyn Lewis and Taleia Moton, transferring from Penn State and Radford respectively. They both received starting roles for the squad.
Moton led all scores with 16 points, followed by senior guard Brittany Poindexter with 14 points. Seniors Brittany Eley and Ashleigh Braxton contributed 13 and 12 points to the effort. Moton also had seven assists.
Sophomore forward Janaa Pickard, a key contributor last season, was lifted off the court with an injury early in the first half.
A strong team effort put the Patriots up 47-20 at the half, but it was not a flawless effort. The Patriots let up nine turnovers in the half, and the Senators were able to take advantage.
Shalisa Hill led the way for the Senators with 12 points.
Although the Patriots used the same starting lineup in the second half, they were able to limit the mistakes from the first half. Once they shook off some of their off-season rust, the Patriots were able to reduce turnovers while increasing their lead.
“The game was a good marker for showing where we are headed,” LaTouche said. “We are headed for success and it was a good way to start the season.”
The Patriots will face Massachusetts Friday, Nov. 12, on the road to open the regular season.
