Top 5 weekend picks November 8

Every week Connect2Mason will offer five entertainment picks for your weekend and week ahead. Ranging from on-campus to off-campus events, Connect2Mason's Top 5 will give you a jump start on your weekend. Here are the Top 5 picks for this weekend:

1. Annual Jazz for Justice Concert
When: Friday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m.
Where: Center for the Arts

The annual Jazz for Justice concert at the Center for the Arts will be both entertaining and for a good cause. Proceeds from the event go towards scholarships for students in the School of Music as well as supporting the ongoing projects of the Fairfax Law Foundation. Jazz for Justice will feature musicians from the surrounding area along with the top jazz students from Mason, so come for a great jazz music experience.

One free student ticket can bee purchased with a valid Mason ID at the Center for the Arts Box Office.

2. Jammin’ Java celebrates 11 years
When: Friday, Nov. 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Where: Jammin’ Java

Come celebrate Fairfax’s local concert at Jammin’ Java’s 11^th anniversary! Named one of the top 100 concert venues in the United States by Pollstar Magazine, Jammin’ Java has been a staple for the Washington D.C. area. Performers from across the world have come to Jammin’ Java to perform in its intimate setting. Celebrate the venue’s anniversary with music lovers alike! The event will feature artist Luke Brindley, whose album was named by the Washington Post as “an early contender for one of the best albums of the year.” Download Brindley's album for free, no strings attached here.

3. Eat the Youth
When: Thursday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Dec. 14
Where: Founders Arts Gallery, Mason Arlington Campus

Eat the Youth are acrylic portraits and collages drawn by Washington D.C. based artist Amy Hughes Braden. The exhibit focuses on the images from personal experiences centered around nostalgia, personal grief and technology and the media’s impact on contemporary life. Experience local art right at Mason!

4. Purchase Tickets for Mumford & Sons
When: Friday, Nov. 9 at 10 a.m.
Where: Patriot Center

Mumford & Sons has removed the traditional “sophomore slump” that some artists face when approaching their second album. Mumford & Sons’ album “Babel” has maintained in the top ten albums downloaded on iTunes since its release in September. Mumford & Sons will be performing at the Patriot Center on Wednesday, Feb. 13. Tickets can be purchased starting  Friday, Nov. 9 at 10:00 a.m. at the Patriot Center box office  or online. Tickets are $55.
 

5. Comedian Pete Holmes
When: Monday, Nov. 11 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: U Street Music Hall, Washington, D.C. 

Nationally recognized stand-up comedian, actor, improviser, writer and cartoonist Pete Holmes will perform at U Street Music Hall on Nov. 11. Known for his appearances on VH1’s “Best Week Ever,” Holmes is also a regular on College Humor’s website. Holmes was named one of Variety Magazine’s Top Ten Comedians To Watch in 2011. Take a break from your school work and enjoy a night of laughs with one of the country’s top comedians.
