Freshman film and video studies major Jake Shapiro was easily able to earn $500 in 60 seconds as he Rickrolled his way into George Mason University history.

Last Thursday, American Idol’s official hair-care sponsor Garnier Fructis partnered with Mason’s Program Board for the “Sing in the Shower Contest,” where students such as Shapiro had the opportunity to pick up a mic for 60 seconds of fame.

A total of 37 student contestants performed for the 1100 people who came out to support the karaoke showdown.

After all singers competed, the votes were tallied and Shapiro was announced as the winner. The song choice that led him to win the competition was “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley.

Held in the Eisenhower building of Presidents Park, students 18 and older were eligible to compete for a $500 prize and a year's worth of Garnier Fructis products. Garnier provided different stations for the event including a registration table, hairstyle station and a decked-out stage for the performances.

The process was simple. All you had to do was register, pick your song from the karaoke booklet, go to the hairstyle station for a pre-performance makeover and rock your style and vocals on stage. Participants were judged in three categories: creativity and originality, style in performance and appearance, and ability to reflect a vibrant and energized style consistent with the Garnier Fructis brand image.

Some of the singers provided great vocal talent while others made their presence felt by showing off their unique personalities.

“The competition isn’t really about how well you can sing, but about how you rock your style on stage,” said Garnier Fructis tour manager Dan Humphrey.

Shapiro, Garnier’s ultimate Mason performer, will go on to compete in the nationwide competition against 10 other university winners. Each university winner will be featured in a 30 to 45 second “Fructis Flow” video by Garnier that will be posted on the Garnier website for viewers to vote on. The video that receives the most votes will win two tickets for this year’s American Idol finale, airfare to the event in Los Angeles, a Garnier Fructis makeover and a $5,000 prize.
