Sophomores Dominate Meet, Help Women Win Quad and Men Top American

The Jim McKay Natatorium was filled with fans Saturday, Jan. 23, to watch a quadrangular men’s and women’s swimming and diving meet between Mason, Army, American, and Old Dominion.

The women’s team was lead by sophomores Ashley Danner and Kristen Meier. Danner won three events including the 50-yard freestyle (24.05), 100-yard breaststroke (1:03.73), and the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.94). Meier, the reigning CAA Diver of the Week, won the 1-meter dive with a score of 278.15 and the 3-meter dive with a score of 306.00.

Danner and Meier’s success helped their team – who won a total of 10 events on the day – secure the win over the three competing universities.

The men’s team had a similar story with sophomores Preston Wolter and Bryan Bahr winning three and two event respectively. Wolter won the 200-yard butterfly (1:52.93), 400-yard individual medley (4:06.11), and the 1,650-yard freestyle (16:12.87). Bahr, also a reigning CAA Diver of the Week, swept the diving events, winning the 1-meter with a 342.60 score and the 3-meter with a 316.30 score. Their efforts were not enough to propel them past all three teams but were enough to collect a victory over American.

The men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams will host their final regular season meet next Sunday, Jan. 31, against George Washington University.
