Question Box: Um... What's that house by President's Park?

Connect2Mason has been asked several times what exactly is the house between President’s Park and the GMU Catholic Campus Ministry Chapel. (Jenna Beaver) 

The Buchanan House is home to 1986 Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize winner of Economic Sciences, James M. Buchanan. Buchanan, 92 years old, is still an active member of George Mason University’s staff.

The house was built in the 1920s and was the former home of previous GMU President George W. Johnson. Later the building was renovated to be used for student research and hold the Center for Study of Public Choice.

Jo Ann Burgess, library assistant for the Center for Study of Public Choice says, “We’ve been using the Buchanan House for Study of Public Choice since 1992.”

She explains, “We have five faculty and three staff who work in the house. We hold classes, seminars, workshops, interviews, and videotaping for [the] graduate economics [program].”

The Buchanan house can be found along Roberts Road, and is nestled in between the back of President’s Park and the GMU Catholic Campus Ministry’s Chapel.
