Book raises questions about Lincoln's colonization views

A new book by George Mason University professors Philip Magness and Sebastian Page makes the case that former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was more committed to colonizing slaves than previously known.

The book called, “Colonization After Emancipation,” presents newly uncovered documents found at the British National Archives outside London.

Historians traditionally differ on whether Lincoln moved away from the idea of colonization after he issued the official Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863.

The newly released book offers evidence that Lincoln continued to support colonization and even engaged in secret diplomacy with the British to establish a colony in British Honduras, now Belize.
