Mason offers counseling services in wake of Navy Yard shooting

In response to the shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington DC that left 12 dead and many more injured, George Mason University President Ángel Cabrera sent out an email to students offering access to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) and to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

“The shooting that occurred on Monday at the Navy Yard in Washington D.C., were horrifying and tragic,” Cabrera said in the email. “We know that members of our student and staff community have been deeply and personally affected by this tragedy, and our hearts go out to them, as well as to the families of all the victems.”

Cabrera said that CAPS counselors are available to students. The Fairfax Campus office in SUB I is open between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. Other CAPS offices are open at the Arlington and Prince William campuses.

The message also included the contact information to health insurance offices open through Mason, as well as phone numbers for COVA Care and Kaiser Permanente.

“What makes the Mason community strong is how we come together during difficult times like these” Cabrera said. “As we share the grief of those who have lost so much, we can rely on one another for support.”
