JC Cinema hosts Mason-style Oscar party
While Los Angeles prepares for their big Academy Awards night on March 1 and 2, Mason will also be preparing something big for the students to attend in anticipation for the main event.
The JC Cinema will screen three classic Academy Award winners, starting with “Slumdog Millionaire” on Saturday at 6 p.m. On Sunday, they will present “The Sound of Music,” and at 12 p.m., followed by “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” at 4 p.m.
However, for those more interested in seeing something that was nominated for this year’s Academy Awards, the Cinema has a special opportunity to fulfill these requests. According to Sara Richard and Rachel Hart, two employees of the OSI Films division, the ending of “Slumdog Millionaire” showing will lead in to the premiere of one of this year’s nominees, “12 Years a Slave,” at 9 p.m.
As for the awards ceremony itself, the Cinema has many different events for students to participate in. For starters, there is currently a contest being held that any student participate in.
“Every Mason student can fill out their own Oscar ballot for whom they think will take home the awards. There will be a grand prize [for] whichever person gets the most correct,” Richard and Hart said.
Currently, the prize is being kept a secret from anyone to add suspense. For clarification on the rules of the contest, information can be found on the OSI Films website at osifilms.gmu.edu and on their Facebook page. The deadline for the contest is March 1 at 12 p.m.
All of the small events that are taking place on Saturday and early Sunday have been planned to lead up to one thing: the Oscar Watch Party, starting at 7:30 p.m. in the JC Cinema where there will be games and other activities until the award ceremony begins at 8 p.m.
With some Academy Award classics running over the weekend, a live broadcast of the Oscars on Sunday, and some fun games for the students to participate in, it seems like the Cinema is ready to celebrate one of the biggest nights for film with something for everyone.
