Although many students struggle with finances during their college years, it is sometimes difficult for young people to understand true poverty. But starting this week, the Mason community will be able to get a better understanding of what it means to be homeless.
Beginning yesterday, the GMU Campus Ministry Association kicked off their annual Hunger and Homelessness Action Week.
The event, which will go on until Nov. 21, will feature activities such as a banquet dinner, a concert, food drives, meal packing events and the annual sleep out. Each year participants of the sleep out are invited to spend one night outside and experience life as a homeless person would.
HHAW is meant to “promote greater awareness of the needs of hungry and homeless people in our community, in the United States, and around the world, and to challenge the entire university community—regardless of religious belief—to take action on their behalf,” says the group’s website.
