Greek Week 2013 Preview
Whether you’re in Greek life or not, you probably know someone who is, so why not go out and support this week’s slew of events and see what Greek life is all about?
The shacks are the most visible reflection of Greek Week. They are built by the various fraternities and sororities to raise funds for Habitat for Humanity. The so-called “Shack-a-thon” includes makeshift shacks built by each Greek organization where members take turns camping out in North Plaza. Each shack is constructed out of reusable materials such as cardboard or plastic bottles to raise awareness of homelessness.
In the style of the Amazing Race, Greek Week’s “Capture the Facts” allows Greek members to run around campus deciphering clues about different fraternities and sororities as they split into teams to compete. Another competition called Aquatics Night is made up of relay races, a cardboard boat race and a synchronized swimming competition. Aquatic Night takes place on Friday, April 19 at the Aquatics and Fitness Center at 9 p.m.
However, if you’re coming out to any event, it should be the Greek Sing on Saturday, April 20 at 8 p.m. Greek organizations compete for a prize through a series of 15-minute sketches and dance numbers allowing Greeks to strut their stuff and showcase their talents. If you are interested in any of these events, be sure to show up early as seating is limited!
As seen last year, Greek Week allows for collaboration among all of Greek Life, not just the traditional Interfraternity and Panhellenic Council. Greek Week includes the efforts of the nine historically African American fraternities as part of the National Pan-Hellenic Council and the Multicultural Greek Council. Throughout the week’s series of competitions, various Greek organizations have been partnered up to compete allowing for a full spectrum of Greek life at Mason to be represented.
If you’re considering being a part of Greek life at Mason next year, Greek Week is the perfect opportunity find out more about each sorority and fraternity.
