Forensics Wins Big in Texas

The George Mason University Forensics Team walked away victorious in the Lone Star State this past weekend, receiving the Sweepstakes award at Hell Froze Over, an annual tournament hosted by the University of Texas at Austin and Bradley University and one of the most competitive tournaments of the team’s spring semester calendar.

“I was, and am, so proud of how the team did this weekend,” said Mickey Cox, a senior history major and member of the team and a senior history major, in an e-mail correspondence. “We had a majority of our team members break into ‘out rounds.’ Amazingly, we even had five of the six performers in one final round. And four of them were freshman, which almost never happens.”

Cox also came out victorious. He received the tournament’s Individual Sweepstakes award for his performance in multiple events.

Cox said he did not expect to do well at all, much less to have the success he did.

“This is the first time that I’ve had so much success at the national level,” said Cox. “But one of the main things that has been installed in me was to take performance as an opportunity to teach your audience, not a chance to get awards…Because I had six events, and the UT campus is huge, most of my stress came from walking between rounds while my shoes fell apart.”

The team loaded the vans at 2:30 a.m. last Friday, Jan. 15 in order to reach their flights in Baltimore. The team arrived mid-day and, according to Cox, spent the rest of the day “perfecting their speeches.”

“All of the success that we experienced this weekend is a testament to the hard work of our team and the undying efforts of our highly qualified coaching staff,” said Cox.

“These students continue to bring great honor to Mason,” said Communication Professor and Director of Forensics Peter Pober in an e-mail sent to central administration. “I am exceedingly proud of them.”
