Student Senate passes resolution to benefit same-sex couples

At their November 7 meeting, the Mason Student Senate passed a resolution in support of extending Virginia marriage benefits to homosexual couples employed by the university. 

As stated in the legislation, the federal government recognizes marriages of same-sex couples who are married in states where it is legal, even if the couples move to states where it is not. However, Virginia deems all homosexual relationships “null and void” and does not recognize those couples legally married in other states.

Mason women's volleyball defeats Fordham 3-1 on Senior Night

The Mason women’s volleyball team defeated the Fordham Rams three sets to one on Senior Night at the RAC on Saturday. The first, third, and fourth sets were highly competitive, with the first and the fourth set exceeding 25 points for a winner to emerge. The Patriots came out victorious due to huge contributions by seniors Tori Price, Lana Zonjic and Laura Spencer. All three put on a show in their last home match of their careers. Zonjic and Spencer led the way for the Patriots with 14 and 12 kills respectively, while Price tallied a team-high 41 assists for the Patriot offense.

Hylton Performing Arts Center receives grant to add education wing

The Hylton Performing Arts Center is in the preliminary planning stages to build an education wing after receiving a $2.5 million dollar grant and a $5 million dollar challenge grant from the Cecil & Irene Hylton Foundation.

Rick Davis, the associate dean of the College of Visual and Performing Arts and executive director of the Hylton Performing Arts Center, and Brian Marcus, associate dean for development at the College of Visual and Performing Arts, said that the Hylton’s growth over the years is a result of a rapidly changing community.

Mason men's basketball comes from behind to win 63-60 in home opener

The Mason men’s basketball team ended the game on an 11-3 run to win their season home opener, 63-60 against American University on Friday night at the Patriot Center.

The Patriots trailed the Eagles, 57-52 with 4:15 left to play when a pair of free throws from Jalen Jenkins began an 11-0 Mason run. A three-point play by Bryon Allen with 3:32 remaining cut the deficit to one when he drew hard contact to make the layup. Strong Mason defense forced a turnover by American and Sherrod Wright got the steal and lifted the score to 58-57 in Mason’s favor.

Mason men’s basketball tips off their inaugural season in the Atlantic 10 in a non-conference matchup against American University tonight at 7 p.m. at the Patriot Center.

The Patriots return all of their key starters from last season, finishing with 22-16 record and advancing to the finals of the College Basketball Invitational.

Sherrod Wright was the top performer for the Patriots last season, averaging 16.5 points per game and will continue to be the biggest asset on the roster this season.

The New Black shares a new perspective on homophobia

Many student organizations within the Mason community teamed up to present a new film exposing the dangers of homophobia at the JC Cinema.

Some students are unaware of the ongoing homophobia within some black communities in Maryland that surfaced after the election of 2008 when President Barack Obama was first elected  and Proposition 8—a proposition to outlaw gay marriage—passed in California.

Provost search committee chairman hosts open forum

The search for a new provost to replace Peter Stearns, who has held the position since 2000, is underway. Professor T. Mills Kelly, the chair of the Provost Search Committee, hosted a forum October 24th to discuss the search with the public.

“It’s a chance for me and others in the search committee to hear feedback,” Kelly said.

Sage workshop displays Native American traditions to Mason students

The Native American and Indigenous Alliance and the Office of Diversity kick off the month of November by teaching Mason students the spiritual and practical uses of sage.

Election Day at Mason

Fairfax proved a pivotol county in the tight Governor's election. Over 800 students, faculty, staff, and Fairfax residents stopped by University Hall to cast their ballots. Democratic Terry McAuliffe won the election with 47.74% of the vote, defeating Republican Ken Cuccinelli and Libertarian Robert Sarvis. 303,465 votes were cast in Fairfax, with 67,000 votes more for McAuliffe than Cuccinelli: almost exactly what the Democrat needed to win.
