[PREVIEW] George Mason vs. Utah Valley -- Women's Basketball

The Mason women’s basketball team takes on the Utah Valley Wolverines at 7 p.m. tonight in their home opener at the Patriot Center.

Mason (1-1) is coming off of a 74-67 win against Morehead State, after dropping their first game of the season to East Carolina. Redshirt sophomore Taylor Brown led the team with 24 points, eight rebounds and five steals, while Sandra Ngoie contributed 14 points and tallied eight rebounds in the game.

Men's soccer scrapes past St. Joe's in PKs to advance to A10 semifinals

The Mason men's soccer team held off the St. Joseph's Hawks in penalty kicks, 4-2 this afternoon to advance to the semifinals of the Atlantic 10 Championships. 

Both teams were held scoreless in regulation as Mason's goalkeeper and A10 Rookie of the Year Steffen Kraus finished with five saves while St. Joe's keeper Andrew D'Ottavi saved four shots.

With a 2-1 win over St. Bonaventure University over the weekend, the Mason men’s soccer team secured the second seed entering the A-10 conference championship today, facing Saint Joseph’s University in Dayton, Ohio.

Mason awarded $500,000 Cybersecurity Grant

This past summer, the National Science Foundation granted $500,000 to George Mason's School of Management and Volgenau School of Engineering. The grant was awarded to fund research on cyber security, with the hope that Mason's curriculum for cyber security leadership offered within the Management of Secure Information Systems program will become a national model.  According to the National Science Foundation’s website, there is a cyber security leadership gap in the U.S.

“When I received the letters from the schools, I looked at the bottom and it said that a social security number was required to accept the scholarship,” Torres said.

OPINION: Mason's weapons policies favor criminals, endanger law-abiding students and staff

Students at Mason are probably well aware of the gun ban on campus and in housing, and due to the lack of outrage, it seems that students don’t mind a temporary suspension of their rights in the name of safety. Students may be “ok” with not being allowed to have a gun on campus, but where does it end? What other self-defense tools are not permitted on campus?
 
Emergency situations can pop up anywhere, anytime. Law can only deter violence and police can only react to it.
