OPINION: Birth Control is not Abortion
By Broadside Correspondent Sabra Hayes
The newly proposed bill by the Bush Administration redefines abortion as “any of the various procedures—including the prescription and administration of any drug or the performance of any procedure or any other action—that results in the termination of the life of a human being in utero between conception and natural birth, whether before or after implantation.” Basically, this rule is stating that several types of birth control, including the Pill and Plan B (also known as emergency contraception), is the same as abortion.
Why I Wouldn’t Trade This Campus For Anything
By Broadside Opinion Writer Scott Mason
In an age where we are constantly examining our own image in the world on personal and organizational levels, it is sometimes difficult to come out with a clear and concise vision of identity. As a student at George Mason University, my own identity has been changing since the day I stepped foot on this campus. Great professors have come and gone, and so have great Mason traditions, areas on campus and even parking spaces. We exist in a series of ever-changing contradictions, and it is here on this campus that I, along with thousands of others, have found a temporary home. Mason is the only place where I care to stay at this juncture in my life. However, I am the last one to be content with the current circumstances that plague so many stdents.
Palin Exposes Republicans and Democrats
By Broadside Opinion Editor Arthur Gailes
Governor Sarah Palin’s selection as Senator John McCain’s running mate has exposed Republicans, Democrats and the supporters of both as hypocrites. It’s as if both sides are unaware that they are arguing against the positions they themselves held just weeks ago. Even by political standards, the lack of spine and principles displayed by both political parties has been astounding.
The VP Decision: Between Lackluster And Disastrous
By Broadside Opinion Columnist Brandon Cosby
The charge of any vice presidential candidate is to do no harm. Above all else, a candidate’s choice of a running mate should never reflect poorly on the top of the ticket. Such criteria narrows down the field of potential vice presidents tremendously, automatically removing those with even the slightest imperfections or hint of scandal in their past. Given this, one would think Senators Barack Obama and John McCain would have chosen better. Both vice presidential candidates have major blights on their records, but one is oh-so-much worse.

Swiper, No Swiping! New Security Proves Tricky
By Broadside Correspondent Thomas McCurdy
As anyone living in or visiting the new student residence halls can see, there is a major difference in security between them and the old buildings. In order for a student to reach their room they must navigate a veritable maze of locked doors that can only be opened by student ID cards. For instance, to reach a room in Northern Neck, a student will need to swipe their card five times—a tricky procedure when bringing in groceries.
