State Forces University Budget Cuts

Tuition costs should not increase until next fiscal year. Faculty, however, might need to worry.

Governor Tim Kaine announced a seven percent budget reduction for the state, which affects Virginia’s universities and their budgets. Provost Peter Stearns and Senior Vice President Maurice Scherrens held an open forum about Mason’s budget reduction plan in response to the state’s reduction plan Tuesday, Oct. 14.

This year’s family weekend starts today and it is packed full of exciting events for your parents and family to enjoy. Headlining the event this weekend is comedian Lewis Black who will perform tomorrow Saturday, Oct. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Patriot Center as part of his “Let Them Eat Cake” national tour. At 10:30 a.m. this Saturday, families are invited for an “Off the Beaten path Tour,” for an exclusive insider’s tour of the Mason campus by the Office of Family and Program Services.

Mason Strong Helps End Sexual Violence

Mason Strong, a newly formed student organization will hold their first general meeting at the Robeson Room of the Johnson Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 17. “Mason strong is a male allies group set up to help end sexual violence on our campus and community,” said Outreach Coordinator Rachel Lindsay. “We are looking for any male members of our community that are interested in ending sexual violence against women.”

Presidential Candidate Ralph Nader to Speak at GMU

Independent third-party presidential candidate Ralph Nader will be coming to GMU this Sunday. He will be speaking at the Student Union Building II Ballroom at 5:00 p.m. and then hold a rally at 5:30 p.m. Topics of discussion will include his absence from the presidential debates, the Iraq War, the environment, and health care.

The current political buzz has rightfully been about the presidential debates. The first presidential debate was pretty even between Senator John McCain and Senator Barack Obama. Both had their moments, but there was no breakout moment for either, like Ronald Reagan saying “there you go again” to President Jimmy Carter in 1980. However, the debate locations leave much to be desired.

The drinking age in this country is one of the oldest in the world and needs to be changed. The current U.S. legal drinking age is 21. Many of our citizens disagree with this age and believe that the age to legally be able to purchase, consume or possess alcohol should be 18.

SG Vice President To Speak At Global Forum Monday

The Global Relations Organization (GRO) will be hosting a “Global Forum” on Monday Oct. 13. The event is “an open forum to discuss international topics and issues facing the world today.” It will be held at the Johnson Center Bistro from 7-9 p.m. The topic will be “Financial vs. Human Capital: Alternative method for development.” It will be presented by Student Government Vice President Claire Forman.

Mason Madness, Family Weekend Almost Here

The weekend of Oct. 17 to Oct. 19 is the eighth annual Family Weekend. The Office of Orientation and Family Programs and Services is the main sponsor of Family Weekend. While the OFPS coordinates the main events of the weekend, they work closely with a variety of other organizations around campus including Student Activities, Student Government, the Alumni Association, and the Office of Housing and Residential Life.
