Oscar Nominations: An Objective Analysis

By Broadside Staff Writer Kyle Ridley.

With the rotation of every calendar hung comes the onslaught of “Best Of” and “Top 10” lists while looking back on the year’s greatest motion pictures. If you’re like me, much of the winter break was spent cramming to catch the flood of remarkable films released just in time for award consideration. 2008 was a riveting year for movies and with the nominations for the 81st annual Academy Awards announced last Thursday, the Oscar race is officially on.

Michelle Obama is Runway Ready

By Broadisde Staff Writer Daniel Odom

In 2008, we here at Broadside have fawned over and debated much of the style choices of the past election.

From Hillary Clinton’s questionable coral jacket to Sarah Palin’s Chairman Mao-inspired suits, fashion from this past election has been full of some rather questionable choices.

While I marveled at the 100-times-more-expensive-than-my-entire-college-career chartreuse atrocity worn by Cindy McCain during the Republican primary, I realized that the only real political trendsetter worth discussing is First Lady Michelle Obama.

The Notorious B.I.G.’s Life Chronicled in New Film

Story by Broadside Staff Writer Ross Bonaime. Photo courtesy of Phil Caruso/Fox Searchlight Pictures.

Notorious is noteworthy for being a musical biopic to a modern day musical legend. Usually, films of this style discuss a musician who has been around for years and show the impact and importance of the artist’s music over decades such as Taylor Hackford’s Ray, James Mangold’s Walk the Line or even Todd Haynes’ 2007 ensemble masterpiece I’m Not There. What is so unique about Notorious is that it is about a musician who is considered legendary and genre-defining after releasing only one album before his death, showing the utter importance of B.I.G. to hip-hop.

Bedtime Stories Only for the Kids

By Connect2Mason Blogger Josh Hylton.

I love kids’ movies that can make me feel like a child again. I love those films that can strike a resonance with the little tyke in me and give me that sense of wonder and imagination that only a young kid can have. Unfortunately, Bedtime Stories instead put me to sleep. How fitting.

The story follows Skeeter (Adam Sandler), a kid who has spent his whole life living in a hotel owned by his father. In order to get Skeeter's father to sign ownership over to him, Barry Nottingham promises that if Skeeter works hard enough, he will one day hand control of the hotel over to him.

PhotobucketWalking into the warm kitchen in your pajamas and taking in the sweet aroma that fills the air is one of the signature moments of the holiday season. To kick off your baking this year, here are some recipes that are simple, but at the same time so delicious that they will leave you, and your family and friends, wanting a second helping.

Christmas Candy Cane Cookies

These cookies are simple to make, but they have a very elegant appearance. They’re perfect to serve with a sizzling hot cup of hot chocolate. Makes about four-dozen cookies.

Top 10 Neo-soul albums of the year

By Connect2Mason Writer Matthew Todd. Photo courtesy of Flickr user William Hook.

PhotobucketIn the flood of sensationalized pop-R&B and hip-hop albums this year, here are 10 of the best, truer soul CDs you’ve missed and NEED to buy.

What is true R&B and hip-hop? Lil’ Wayne’s “Tha Carter III” was okay, but it was strictly for the mainstream once “Lollipop” began to catapult its way to #1 in the Hot 100 Singles. After selling 1-million copies its first week and despite mostly great reviews, “Tha Carter III” was not the top of my personal best list this year in rap. T.I. and Young Jeezy’s new CDs also ruled the roost as well, while Usher, Mariah Carey, Fergie, and Beyonce continued dominating in R&B, but for those looking to burst their conventional pop bubble and exploring stronger modern soul recapturing Motown, old school blues and jazz, and the 70s soul sound, here are the 10 CDs you need to add to your collection.

All I Want For Christmas Is….

By Simone Gaulman. Photo courtesy of Flickr user mysza831.

PhotobucketIt is that time of year again, folks! There is a month left before the big sha-bang [also known as Christmas] and many have already begun their preparations. Christmas lights are being set up, tickets are being bought for those going out of town, and mall Santas [along with parents] are now being accosted by thousands of children presenting their Christmas lists hoping to get what they have asked for. Unknown to them, it is rare to get everything you ask for; a lesson us older kids had to learn. Thinking back on this time when I was a kid, I remember that there was some stuff that I had asked for but never got.

Thanks a lot, Santa!
